Church Lighting Design: Creating the Right Mood

“Mood” can become a dangerous word in church lighting because it sometimes leads to lighting for lighting's sake.

We prefer intent.

What should people be looking at? What should this moment feel like? Does the lighting support that?

Let the service determine the lighting

A high-energy opening song might justify movement and saturated color. A quiet teaching moment probably doesn't.

Contrast matters. Color matters. Movement matters. Sometimes darkness matters.

The best lighting operators know that doing less can have more impact than constantly changing something.

Build a strong visual environment, then allow the service to determine what the lights do.
